General Environmental Concerns

Argus Associates. Environmental information sorted by issue, divided into 5 main subjects and more than 60 sub-subjects. Provided by Argus Associates, Inc., USA.

Centre for Economic and Social Studies on the Environment (CESSE), at Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, maintains a page with more than 300 links to environmental issues, listed by subject. Suited especially for European users.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is an Indian research and advocacy NGO following a wide range of topics on environment and sustainable development. In addition to focusing on domestic Indian problems, CSE is probably one of the best institutions to consult for a "southern" view on international environmental co-operation. Flagship publications include the biweekly Down to Earth, and the biannual Global Environmental Negotiations.

Electronic Development and Environment Information System (ELDIS). This search engine includes general and key electronic information sources on development and environment, libraries, news sources, maps, reference sources, calendars, and more. It is hosted by the British Library for Development Studies.

Environmental Atlas is an Internet-based tool for researching environmental policy world-wide. The Atlas uses a standard set of criteria to categorize environmental conditions and policies and facilitates quick access to information about a single country, as well as comparisons between countries.

Geneva Environment Network (GEN) gives an overview of the many Geneva-based UN organizations, government agencies, IGOs, NGOs and industry organizations dealing with environmental issues.

Linkages/Earth Negotiations Bulletin is a very good, updated and comprehensive website for information about ongoing international environmental processes, provided by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in Canada. The website is designed to be an electronic clearing-house for information on past and upcoming international meetings related to environment and development policy. It also includes a good portal for information about the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, September 2002.

Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, provides more than 150 links to environmental issues, regions, organizations, and governments. Presented alphabetically, by subject.

Atmosphere

Earth Negotiations Bulletin is an independent reporting service covering both past, current, and forthcoming meetings on climate and atmosphere. It often includes summaries and analysis of each meeting, plus digital coverage with photographs and Real Audio recordings.

UNEP/Industry and Environment's Ozon Action Programme's homepage. In addition to information on UNEP/IE's work, it also includes links to stratospheric protection sites. Contains industry associations, standards organizations, government agencies, IGOs, NGOs, and research/academic institutions. Maintained by UNEP/IE, France.

UNFCCC

US Environmental Protection Agency provides a linkpage to organizations and institutions concerned with climate change. Mainly North American links, but not exclusively.

EXTOXNET Allows searching in the EXTOXNET information base on toxicology and pesticide information. It includes information profiles and briefs, factsheets, newsletters, and technical information. Extoxnet is a co-operative effort of University of California-Davis, Oregon State University, Michigan State University, and Cornell University

Marine Environment and Marine Living Resources

FAO Fisheries Department has made available information on the Internet, amongst others its Code of Conduct For Responsible Fisheries.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Library Directory of Sites of Interest on Internet. The directory provides a wide range of links to sites of interest to the maritime community. Sorted by subject. A country section is included as well.

NetCoast is a coastal zone management information source, provided by the Dutch Coastal Zone Management Centre in the Netherlands.

Nature Conservation and Terrestrial Living Resources

Forestworld is an extensive, fully searchable database of sites relating to the forest industry. Provided by the Forest Partnership, USA.

Journal of International Wildlife Law and Policy (issued by Taylor and Francis) features scholarly articles on wildlife conservation law and policy. The site also includes tools such as the American Society of International Law (ASIL)'s Wildlife Interest Group Treaty Database, a database of international and regional treaties pertaining to the conservation of wildlife, as well as national legislation. Other tools cover bibliographies, wildlife resources, and biosafety resources on the Internet.

Montréal Process is the intergovernmental Working Group on Criteria and Indicators for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests. It was formed in Geneva, Switzerland, in June 1994 to develop and implement internationally agreed criteria and indicators for the conservation and sustainable management of temperate and boreal forests.

Native Forest Network (NFN) is a network NGO consisting of forest activists, indigenous peoples, conservation biologists, and NGOs. Dedicated to protecting the world's remaining native forest be they temperate or otherwise.

Natural Resources Research Information Pages (NRRIPS) have links to institutions and organizations, government agencies, databases and literature, conferences and research news, and outdoor recreation research. Maintained by Yu-Fai Leung, assistant professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at North Carolina State University.

UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) provides information services on conservation and sustainable use of the world's living resources, and guides the users to global data on biodiversity. Its programmes concentrate on species, forests, protected areas, marine, mountains, and freshwaters; plus habitats affected by climate change such as polar regions. The Centre also addresses the relationship between trade and the environment and the wider aspects of biodiversity assessment. The Centre is established as the biodiversity assessment and policy implementation arm of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and is located in the United Kingdom.

United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) is a subsidiary body of the UN Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) with the main objective to promote the management, conservation, and sustainable development of all types of forests and to strengthen long-term political commitment to this end-based on the Rio Declaration, the Forest Principles, Chapter 11 of Agenda 21, and the outcome of the intergovernmental Panel on Forests (IPF)/Intergovernmental Forum on Forest (IFF) processes.

Virtual Library of Ecology and Biodiversity. This division of the Virtual Library Project specializes in reviewing internet information sources pertaining to ecology and biodiversity based on their educational value. The site is nested within The Center for Conservation Biology Network (CCBN), USA.

Wetlands International website includes various information on conservation of wetlands and wetland species, including the Ramsar Database.

WWW Virtual Library on Forestry. Includes links to actors, issues, publications, databases, and other forestry-related sites on the Internet. Created by the EMIT-METLA group (Group for Information Technology and Integration in Environmental Monitoring, Ecosystem Management, and Enterprise Modeling) at the Finnish Forestry Research Institute.

Water Librarians' Home Page is maintained by Robert Teeter, and provides links to useful sites within water management.

Water Quality Web Resources is a searchable directory of sites with information about water resources and water safety issues. Maintained by the Excellence in Water Quality Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA.

The World's Water includes a number of tables with compiled data on international freshwater resources, as well as a large list of links to relevant internet sites. Much of the information on the site is drawn from the book The World's Water: The Biennial Report on Freshwater Resources, but is updated more frequently. Maintained by the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security in California, USA.

Sustainable Development

Earth Trends: The Environmental Information Portal, an online collection of information regarding the environmental, social, and economic trends that shape our world. Committed to the principle that accurate information drives responsible decisions by governments and individuals, EarthTrends offers the public a large breadth of statistical, graphic, and analytical data in easily accessible formats. An initiative from the World Resources Institute (WRI), USA.

Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) is a measure of overall progress towards environmental sustainability, developed for 142 countries. The ESI scores are based upon a set of 20 core 'indicators', each of which combines two to eight variables for a total of 68 underlying variables. The ESI permits cross-national comparisons of environmental progress in a systematic and quantitative fashion. The ESI is a result of collaboration among the World Economic Forum's Global Leaders for Tomorrow Environment Task Force, The Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, and the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).

Global Energy Market Place, a searchable database of more than 2500 energy efficiency and renewable energy annotated web links. Sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency, and created by the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST).

International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) is a Geneva-based non-profit NGO established in 1996 to advance the understanding of links between trade and sustainable development. In addition to a number of reports on the topic, the weekly Bridges Trade News Digest and the montly Bridges Review are also available online. They contain reports and analyses of recent developments within important forums for trade and sustainable development. Parts of the Bridges information is also available online in Spanish, French and German. During WTO Ministerial Conferences, the ICTSD website also has daily coverage of the deliberations.

International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in Canada maintains a good website portal for information about the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, September 2002.

International Programs Center (IPC), part of the Population Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census provides world population information, has links to international information resources on this subject, and offers downloading of software and applications, such as the Population Analysis System.

InterNetwork for Sustainability is a web-based data and information center to support all those active in sustainable development, and seeks to make information about sustainable development visible and easily accessible. Every link is screened by a professional editorial team before publishing. iNS has a global approach, but supports local and dedicated portals on national or specific subject level. iNS InterNetwork for Sustainability is a nonprofit Dutch-based informal network.

Sustainable Development (SD) Gateway, integrates the on-line information developed by members of the Sustainable Development Communications Network (SDCN) and is hosted by the International Institute on Sustainable Development (IISD).

United Nations Sustainable Development Web has been developed in response to decisions made by the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. Weight i sput on sustainable development issues, but it also contains links to major agreements on economic, social, and natural resources issues.

Industry and Environment

Global Network of Environment and Technology (GNET). Provides access to information on environmental products and services, contracts, US government programmes, policy, and law, industry news, and business assistance resources via the World-Wide Web. Also contains the TechKnow Database on technical solutions yo environmental problems. Users can get information as well as enetring their own data into the base. The site is provided by Global Network of Environment and Technology (GNET), USA.

International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) is the petroleum industry's own "environmental organization", its mission being to develop and promote scientifically sound, cost-effective, practical, socially, and economically-acceptable solutions to global environmental issues pertaining to the petroleum industry. Offers a number of downloadable reports divided into the following main topics: oil spill preparedness and response, global climate change, biodiversity, fuel quality and emissions, human health, and urban air quality management.

UNEP/Industry and Environment's International Cleaner Production Information Clearinghouse database provides information about clean technologies. Maintained by UNEP/IE, France.

World Business Council for Sustainable Development is a Swiss based international NGO. Its members are large industrial companies.

Research Institutions

The UK-based International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is one of the world's most important research institutes focusing on sustainable development, and has a large number of research reports available for download on the Internet.

The US-based World Resources Institute is another leading research institute dedicated to research on global environmental protection. Among its publications, is the biannual World Resources report, an authoritative source of statistics relevant to environment and sustainable development and partly downloadable from WRI's homepage.

Environmental Law and Legislation

ECOLEX is a UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/IUCN joint project to provide access to international and national environmental law information, for developing countries in particular. ECOLEX includes information on multilateral treaties; national legislation; European Union instruments; international "soft law" and related documents; law and policy literature; and judicial decisions.

Environmental Treaties and Resource Indicators (ENTRI) site provides on-line searching of a database that integrates information about environmental treaties with national resource indicators. The service is provided by the Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), USA, which operates the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) for the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Data are provided by the IUCN; UNEP; Freedom House, USA: the Multilaterals Project of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, USA; the World Resources Institute, USA; and the British Columbia Ministry of Environment, Land and Parks.

Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, USA, has a site with links to multilateral conventions, organized by subject. It is a part of the Multilateral Project, which aim to make available the texts of international multilateral conventions and other instruments.

Global Legal Information Network (GLIN) provides a database of national laws from more than 35 contributing countries. The database consists of searchable legal abstracts in English and some full texts of laws in the language of the contributing country. More than 54,000 records. Provided by the US Law Library of the Congress.

Globelaw is a searchable database of selected sources and reference material for international conventions and international and national law and policy, such as nuclear transport, nuclear testing, climate change and the Law of the Sea Convention.

International Environmental Agreements Website provides information related to the International Environmental Agreements (IEA) Database, a project dedicated to creating a comprehensive database of international environmental agreements. It was initiated in 2002 to create a systematic and comprehensive catalogue of all intergovernmental environmental agreements, providing environmental negotiators, treaty secretariats, scholars, students, and interested citizens with a reliable list of all historic and current IEAs. The project seeks to capture that subset of efforts to regulate human interactions with the environment that involve legally binding commitments ('agreements') among governments (international) that have environmental protection as a primary objective (environmental). Although the initial focus is on creating a comprehensive list of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), the project is beginning to develop a complete set of IEAs, including bilateral agreements (BEAs) as well. The site is administered by Professor Ronald B. Mitchell at the University of Oregon, USA.

UN Environment Programme (UNEP)'s Division of Environmental Conventions is tasked with identifying synergies and promoting collaboration among international environmental conventions. The bulletin 'Synergies' is available for downloading.

UN Treaty Database. The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) acts as depositary for several agreements on environment and development. Chapter XXVII on this site provides status of participation on several UN treaties on environment and development. Chapter XXI includes UN treaties on the law of the sea. Subscription required.

WWW Virtual Library on Law. Wide coverage of actors and issues concerning law, including environmental law. Listed both by type of organization and by topic. National Library for the Environment (NLE): Environmental News, has a topic-based list of websites (mainly US-based) with environmental news. NLE is hosted by the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), USA.

Envirobiz News. Access to weekly news of interest to environmental professionals. In addition, archived material is available through a full-text search engine. The service is free, but you need to register. Provided by the International Information Environmental Network, USA.

EnviroLink Network collects environmental news articles from all over the world, and contains links to subscribable environmental mailing lists and press releases. EnviroLink is run primarily by dedicated volunteers and is based in the USA.

Environmental Data Services (ENDS) is a daily environmental news briefing on European policy, regulations, and other matters, as well as other services. Partly pay site. ENDS is located in the United Kingdom.

Environmental News Network (ENN) provides daily news services. Also includes radio news and background material. Its goals are to help educate the public on major issues and to provide tools to help individuals take action in their own communities. ENN is not an activist publication, but instead try to present information from all sides, enabling the users to make their own decisions. Among the products which are available free of charge are its daily news, feature articles, and daily newsletter distributed by e-mail. ENN is located in the USA.

Planet Ark: Reuters World Environmental News is a comprehensive source of environmental news, published daily. It has a useful news archive search engine. E-mail subscription to news headlines is available free of charge. Planet Ark is an Australian not-for-profit organization and Reuters is a global information company based in the United Kingdom.
